Unfortunately, it is not measured in daily clinics due to this research misconduct.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Cambria; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><o:p> </o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Cambria; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">A distinguished ASE member, Dr. James Thomas, invented a Tau formula that is logically flawed. Both its experimental and clinical "verification" must have been motivated reasoning. No one can obtain good data with unintentional mistakes. Anyone can tell it is not working by simply checking it on a random patient. The results will be inconclusive. Nevertheless, this incorrect theory has been recommended in both ASE's textbooks and diastolic function guidelines to this day.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Cambria; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><o:p> </o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Cambria; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">It is fair to say that motivated reasoning is not uncommon in researchers. If an influential researcher uses it to justify a wrong method or tool, it is like putting the lighthouse in the wrong place. Traumatic events could follow as a result of reckless behaviour.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Cambria; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><o:p> </o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Cambria; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">Not only is the incorrect theory misleading, but it also has a negative effect on genuine Tau research and development. Yet the measurement of Tau thrived on the other side of the planet. Mindray launched the first Tau-measurable Echo machine in 2017.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Cambria; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><o:p> </o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Cambria; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">Tau is the only index directly related to the power of the cardiac muscle. Once it is excluded, all the approaches from the ASE diastolic function guidelines have to be indirect descriptions. Compared with Tau, routine assessments of diastolic function could be inaccurate up to 30% of the time. We can elaborate on this upon request.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Cambria; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">Tens of thousands of diastolic dysfunction diagnoses are made every day worldwide. Imagine that up to 30% of them could be inaccurate! Imagine that some patients receive treatment based on those diagnoses! child, I didn't take it seriously. It seemed like a funny tale, just the
adults' way of fooling kids around with their wild imaginations. However, as I
grew up, I realized that this story could actually happen in the adult world.
It's astonishing to see how even intelligent and respectable individuals can
get involved in such situations.<span></span></p><a name='more'></a></o:p><o:p></o:p><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">One such example is Dr. Anversa, the former director of the
Center for Regenerative Medicine at Harvard. He was regarded as a pioneer in
cardiac stem cell therapy and received numerous accolades, including a research
achievement award from the American Heart Association. Unfortunately, when other
research teams attempted to replicate his results, they failed. Rather than
acknowledging the shortcomings, they were ridiculed for their lack of skill,
mirroring the events of "The Emperor's New Clothes."</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">During that time, Chinese researchers contributed
significantly to cardiac stem cell papers, making it a phenomenal parade.
However, as we know, the house of cards eventually collapsed. Dr. Anversa had
to leave Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women's Hospital after
several of his papers were flagged and retracted. In 2017, the hospital settled
with the U.S. government for $10 million over allegations of fraudulent use of
federal funding.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Dr. Thomas, another distinguished Harvard professor, and
former president of the American Society of Echocardiography also took part in
a similar parade. He introduced a formula to calculate Tau in an Echo lab, but
it was built on flawed assumptions. Despite its logical flaws, his formula kept
popping up in papers. Luckily, recent observations show a decline in its use,
indicating some rationality among researchers.<o:p></o:p></p>
